Ferris Bueller Remake Announced - God Help Us All

I thought it was bad enough that The Karate Kid was being remade into a "more current" version staring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith, but now I think we've officially gone off the deep end. Paramount Pictures is announcing that a script has been approved for a pseudo-remake of the John Hughes classic with Zac Efron staring in the role of Ferris. The movie is set in the present day and will begin shooting sometime later this year.

Instead of being set in Chicago, the film will be shot on-site in New York City and will chronicle a day in the life of Ferris Bueller Jr. (an undergrad student at NYU) who skips all his college courses to have a day on the town. Ferris Jr. is the son of the original Ferris from the 1986 movie. Matthew Broderick has agreed to sign on in a cameo role (and thus selling his soul to the devil) to play the senior Ferris. Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus are rumored as being considered for the role of young Ferris' love interest. No word if Mia Sara will return as Sloan Peterson (ie. Ferris Jr's Mom).

It's bad enough that we're getting yet another remake/sequel of a beloved movie, but to have it focus on Ferris in college is just insane. Part of the whole appeal of the original was him living at home with his parents and having to avoid letting them find out about his school-ditching plans. Do we really need to force feed a classic idea to a new generation? I can't believe Broderick is agreeing to this drivel. Regardless of if we want to see this or not, look for Ferris Bueller's Day Off to be released in theaters sometime in late 2011. I would not be surprised if they throw an "In 3D" at the end of this piece of trash. Cue John Hughes rolling over in his grave.

I think that Hollywood has just run out of ideas. Have you heard about the remake of the classic "Overboard"? J-Lo is set to start. Gah.
